Different professionals and people with experience with BPD will share important aspects about what it is, how it affects the person and their environment, the importance of early detection, specialized care and intervention with the environment.
This is for you if you are a person diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), a family member or someone close to you, or if you work in the educational, social, health, or mental health fields. And in general, it's for anyone interested in learning more about this disorder.
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by instability in mood, behavior, and relationships with others, and leads to difficulties in other areas of a person's life (education, work, or family). Of all personality disorders, it is the most frequently diagnosed, affecting approximately 2 to 5% of the adult population. BPD usually appears during adolescence or early adulthood, but diagnosis is complex: it often occurs in conjunction with other disorders such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, attention deficit disorders, or substance abuse.
The symptoms of this disorder cause the individual difficulties in emotional regulation (affective instability, inappropriate anger, fear of abandonment, and feelings of emptiness), the establishment of unstable and conflictive relationships with others, impulsivity, reckless behavior (which may include self-harm, suicide attempts, and substance abuse), and difficulty directing their behavior toward life goals. All of this negatively affects every aspect of the person's life and also generates significant concern and distress within their social circle.
In this meeting we want to talk about how BPD affects the person at different life stages, the importance of its detection and care for the person, and how it impacts the different areas of their life.
