Addictions and intellectual disability. A guide for early detection

The guide offers a practical tool for the early detection of addictions in people with intellectual disabilities, an area where these problems often go unnoticed due to stigma, lack of training, and the absence of adapted protocols. It presents the most common types of addictions (substance-related and behavioral), the fundamental role of families, professionals, and institutions, and the main risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs. It proposes a person-centered approach based on rights, cognitive accessibility, and networking, and describes specific, adapted assessment tools (such as the drug wheel, life history, ecomap, and behavioral log). Finally, it includes a step-by-step detection protocol and a collection of easy-to-read resources and guides to support prevention, intervention, and support.
