Eating disorder

Why might a person with ED abuse alcohol?

There are several reasons why a person affected by an eating disorder may develop alcohol abuse behavior:

  • The disinhibition provided by consumption, even if mild, facilitates the ability for social interaction, and has a direct effect on self-esteem .
  • Alcohol is used as a form of emotional regulation . It helps to cope with unpleasant emotions such as loneliness, boredom or sadness. As our followers told us: "This way the sadness weighed less and helped me silence my voice."
  • The initial mild intoxication increases the feeling of euphoria, becoming an escape from problems. "I used alcohol to forget everything, to lose my inhibitions," they tell us.
  • Since it is a "social" drug, it is used to fit in with others and meet social expectations : "I didn't want to be excluded, so I forced myself to swallow my fears."
  • It has an anorexigenic function , that is, the person stops eating to consume alcohol with the idea that, by sacrificing food, they will reduce their weight: "If I knew that day that I would drink, I would restrict my food to the maximum."
  • There is also the belief that alcohol warms you up and combats the cold of malnutrition.
