Stigma and mental health
Why is it important to integrate first-person experience into mental health?
First-person experience in mental health refers to the knowledge gained through direct experience of mental health problems and the treatments received. This type of experience allows people to identify situations of discrimination and subtle practices that can reinforce stigma.
Recognizing this experience as legitimate knowledge helps challenge the notion that people with mental health conditions are incapable of making decisions. Furthermore, it fosters more equitable relationships and dismantles stereotypes, contributing to the creation of more inclusive and respectful mental health services.
