Why does apathy appear in psychotic disorders?
Apathy in psychosis is linked to alterations in the brain's dopaminergic circuits, which manage motivation and behaviors aimed at obtaining rewards or avoiding punishments. These biological changes contribute to difficulty initiating activities, significantly impacting daily life.
On a psychological level, negative thoughts of inadequacy, such as "I won't be able to do it," and the fear of facing unpleasant situations also foster apathy. Furthermore, previous experiences of failure can lead to avoidance patterns when it comes to tasks. These factors combine to create a cycle where starting any activity is difficult, perpetuating a lack of motivation to act.
