Addiction to new technologies

Why do people like screens so much?

Today's society is organized around social media, and modern life is audiovisual, multimedia, multi-screen, and multi-connected. There's a tendency to live life in micro-moments, new, brief temporal spaces of connection that we dedicate to accessing information, communicating immediately and quickly, and being present out of fear of "not being there" and "not missing out."

Screens have immense power; they are a window to easy and quick access. We can connect 24 hours a day, anywhere, and on the go. They offer us countless possibilities, constituting an extraordinary medium for relationships, communication, learning, satisfying curiosity, and entertainment. They provide quick answers, immediate rewards, visibility, self-affirmation, a sense of identity within a group, and constant connection. It is a space where exposure, sharing, and recognition are paramount.

The use of screens, like any other activity that gives us pleasure, results in the brain releasing large and constant amounts of dopamine, derived from the continuous gratification and reward we receive (when we get likes on photos, videos, or comments, when we play video games or online gambling games, etc.). But, in addition, we must not forget that these devices and the different applications or video games we use are designed and developed to capture our attention.
