What signs can teachers detect that might lead them to suspect that a student is self-harming?

  • Unjustified cuts, burns, grazes or blows.
  • Wearing inappropriate clothing (e.g., long sleeves in summer) or refusing to participate in activities that involve changing clothes (e.g., gymnastics, swimming).
  • Regular use of bandages.
  • Verbalization of ideas related to self-harm (e.g., in class, drawings, conversations with classmates).
  • Frequent need for privacy.
  • Carrying sharp objects (razor blades, pieces of glass,...).
