What signs can teachers detect that might lead them to suspect that a student is self-harming?
- Unjustified cuts, burns, grazes or blows.
- Wearing inappropriate clothing (e.g., long sleeves in summer) or refusing to participate in activities that involve changing clothes (e.g., gymnastics, swimming).
- Regular use of bandages.
- Verbalization of ideas related to self-harm (e.g., in class, drawings, conversations with classmates).
- Frequent need for privacy.
- Carrying sharp objects (razor blades, pieces of glass,...).
