Suicide prevention

What should we never say to a person who wants to commit suicide?

We must avoid saying anything that invalidates or worsens the person's suffering, that poses or is understood as a challenge, that does not take them seriously, or that is a problem for their loved ones.

Some of the things we shouldn't say to him are:

  • He just wants attention.
  • Don't talk nonsense.
  • If he wants to do it, he should do it properly, but he shouldn't bother anyone.
  • Nothing's happening.
  • Those are his own things.
  • That he is in the best moment of his life.
  • There are people who are worse off.
  • Saying those things to me is going to kill me.
  • You're going to kill your father with your things.
  • You're just causing trouble.
