What is the relationship between ADHD and poor academic performance?

ADHD, with its significant attentional, impulsive, and hyperactive characteristics, greatly hinders adequate academic performance, as affected students find it very difficult to acquire the minimum knowledge required by the current educational system to successfully complete their studies. Good academic performance demands that students possess full attention, concentration, and abstract thinking skills , along with the ability to voluntarily limit their age-appropriate urges to move and play during the sequential 40-45 minute periods of class time. Students with ADHD quickly "tune out" of what the teacher is explaining and lose any chance of learning the material. Bored and unable to stay still and attentive, they become distracted by entering their own imaginary world or interfering with the work of their classmates.
