What physical symptoms should alert us to an eating disorder?

Some physical changes may lead us to suspect that there is an eating disorder.

  • Rapid weight loss without a known cause.
  • Delay in normal growth for age and weight.
  • Sudden weight changes.
  • Menstrual disorders, loss of menstruation without medical reason.
  • Bone decalcification (osteoporosis).
  • Hirsutism or lanugo (fine hair, like in babies, in areas where there was none before, and loss in the genital area).
  • Swollen cheeks from self-induced vomiting (parotid hypertrophy).
  • Dental abnormalities (loss of enamel layer, cavities).
  • Calluses on the knuckles of some fingers.
