Maternity

What is "maternity blues" or postpartum sadness?

It's a very common and normal reaction, associated with the hormonal changes experienced by approximately half of all women in the first week after childbirth. It's known by different names: maternity blues , baby blues , or postpartum dysphoria. It shouldn't be considered a disorder and is usually temporary, although if it doesn't improve, it can develop into postpartum depression.

Postpartum blues typically appear between the second and fifth day after childbirth, with mood swings, crying for no apparent reason, irritability, sadness, insomnia, and fatigue . Many women feel guilty for experiencing these depressive feelings when they are expected to be happy about the birth of their child. Therefore, they often avoid discussing their symptoms or negative feelings.
