Eating disorder

What is the first-line treatment for eating disorders?

First-line treatment for eating disorders in adolescents consists of psychosocial interventions (aimed at correcting cognitive distortions and improving self-esteem and social relationships) and family therapy (aimed at improving family relationships and communication).

Pharmacological treatment is not the first-line treatment, but it is used to treat associated problems (depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder). Some studies in adults with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder show that psychotropic medications can help reduce binge eating, but studies on the effectiveness of pharmacological treatments in adolescents are limited.
