Communication
What expressions should we avoid saying to a person who has an eating disorder?
When we are dealing with people who have an eating disorder (ED) and are in recovery, some comments can have a significant impact. Although a comment is often well-intentioned, a lack of understanding of this disorder can lead us to underestimate the impact of words. Given that each person is different and, therefore, not everyone reacts to these comments in the same way, let's review some of the most common expressions that we know are harmful:
- "This is a whim, a fad, or a choice."
- "You don't seem to have an eating disorder."
- "You are hurting the people who love you."
- "It's easy, you just have to eat."
- "Do it for the people who love you."
- "Are you going to eat that much?"
- "Ugh, this is so fattening."
- "I'd like to lose weight as fast as you."
- "You're looking great."
- "You needed it."
