MAOI antidepressants

What diet should I follow if I am taking MAOI antidepressants?

MAOIs (macro-inhibiting antidepressants) can cause dangerous interactions with certain foods and beverages. It is recommended to avoid foods containing high levels of tyramine, as the interaction of tyramine with MAOIs can lead to a severe increase in blood pressure and require urgent treatment.

Some of the foods to avoid are: strong or aged cheeses; cured, smoked or processed meats; pickled foods; soy and soy products; peas; and alcoholic beverages, among others.

You may need to continue following a low tyramine diet for a few weeks after you stop taking the medication.

If you are undergoing treatment with MAOIs, your doctor will provide you with a complete list of foods you should not eat.
