Sensitization

What can we do if our child with autism is being bullied at school?

Unfortunately, half of all children with autism spectrum disorder experience bullying at some point in their lives, according to international studies. Without a doubt, there must be zero tolerance for this.

First, we must inform the educational center of the situation and our concerns in order to develop an action plan, if necessary.

As parents, we must be attentive to possible warning signs : loss or damage of materials, injuries, increase in obsessive behaviors, rituals, stereotypies, hypersensitive reaction, increased nervousness in the face of small incidents, loss of interest in activities that were enjoyed, more isolation, sadness, resistance or refusal to go to the educational center, etc.

It is also important to talk to our son or daughter , at their level of understanding, about bullying and harassment, and about why they are wrong, since people with ASD have difficulty distinguishing the intentions of others and interpreting social situations.

There is still a long way to go in this field; we must continue working at different levels, promoting values, diversity, awareness and understanding of people with ASD among all students .
