What can healthcare professionals do to combat stigma?
One might think that healthcare professionals, given their knowledge of mental health, should be free from stereotypes and prejudices, but this is not always the case. Here are some tips for healthcare professionals who want to take further steps in the fight against stigma:
- Know the facts. Understand the reality of living with a mental health problem, get informed, and don't just rely on prejudices.
- Training. Encourage the implementation of training programs in the health center, so that all professionals can become familiar with the reality of stigma, discrimination and human rights in the health field and acquire tools to deal with it.
- Be mindful of your language. The language we use is relevant and influences how we relate to others. We must pay attention to the language we use and promote non-discriminatory language.
- Educate others. Transmit knowledge and do not tolerate discriminatory attitudes or behaviors.
- Focus on the positive. The collective imagination is full of examples of negative stereotypes about people with mental health problems. It's important to reinforce positive stories and make visible what we often overlook, even though it's usually the norm.
- Include people with mental health problems in the design, implementation and evaluation of services.
- Promote the presence of the first person in decision-making spaces.
- Adopt a perspective based on the promotion and defense of human rights
- Promote autonomy.
- Recognizing our own prejudices and that we can fall into discriminatory behaviors.
