Eating disorder
What can be done from primary and community care when a person exhibits behaviors that put them at risk of eating disorders?
Primary care teams can take various actions to prevent these risky behaviors from developing into a potential eating disorder. In fact, it is highly recommended that they do so if they have the opportunity. Here are some examples of actions that could be implemented in primary care:
- Follow-up from pediatrics or family medicine to assess the evolution of risk behaviors, exploring not only weight loss and eating habits, but also mood, body dissatisfaction and aspects related to the family.
- Consider the possibility of conducting a group to work on self-esteem and body image by the emotional well-being references of the area.
- Consider contacting a community resource (the school itself, a youth center, a civic center, etc.) aimed at children, young people or families, to carry out a group activity to also work on self-esteem and body image.
- We recommend that the family contact a local association specializing in eating disorders, so that they can be monitored and advised on what to do depending on how the case evolves.
