What are the symptoms of depression in teenagers?

Symptoms of depression can vary depending on age, cognitive and emotional development, and verbal ability to express emotions and feelings. Adolescents and children in puberty tend to present the same symptoms.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Negative and antisocial behaviors.
  • Consumption of toxic substances.
  • Irritability, bad mood and aggressive behavior.
  • Feelings of not being accepted and understood, isolation and social withdrawal
  • Neglect in personal hygiene and self-care.
  • Sadness and inability to experience pleasure and enjoyment (anhedonia).
  • Changes in appetite and weight.
  • Sleep disturbances.
  • Low school performance and absenteeism.
  • Thoughts of death and suicide attempts occur more frequently.
