Stigma
What are microstigmata?
These are subtle, automated, almost imperceptible behaviors that are stigmatizing and that we likely carry out without intending to exclude or mistreat anyone. They are small comments, jokes, nonverbal behaviors, or attitudes that perpetuate stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination , and that can go unnoticed or be considered normal or harmless. Changing and avoiding them is a very important step in beginning to fight stigma and demonstrates that we can all do something to eradicate it.
Some examples of microstigmata are:
- Speaking to an adult in a childish way because they have a disability or a mental health disorder, assuming they have fewer abilities.
- Feeling sorry for people with mental health problems, without understanding that they can lead a full life.
- Assuming that a person with a psychological disorder will not be able to study or work normally.
- To overprotect or control a person assuming they are incapable of doing so.
- Excluding a person from decision-making under the assumption that we are helping them because it will be difficult for them to make a good decision.
