What are the consequences of self-harm?
The consequences of self-harm can occur in both the short and long term, with the latter perhaps being the most serious. In the short term, it is a behavior that can be stigmatizing, in addition to affecting social and interpersonal relationships, as it involves isolation, feelings of being misunderstood, worry, and distress within the social and family environment, etc. Among the long-term consequences, besides the chronicity of these immediate effects, the fact that self-harm can become the habitual way of coping with distress stands out, preventing the learning of more adaptive coping strategies, and all that this implies. Furthermore, there is the risk that this self-harming behavior may be associated with more serious problems, such as the development of suicidal thoughts.
