It is a complex and heterogeneous disorder, whose origin involves genetic, biological, and environmental factors. Although research studies indicate that genetic factors have the greatest impact on susceptibility to the disorder, its origin has also been linked to other factors such as tobacco or alcohol use during pregnancy, prematurity, low birth weight, intrauterine growth restriction, or severe brain injuries. However, despite being the most studied childhood psychiatric disorder, its exact causes and mechanisms remain unknown.
