Self-harm

At what age does self-harm usually begin?

Very little data is available on the incidence and prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSI) before the age of twelve, but recent studies indicate that this behavior typically begins between the ages of eleven and thirteen. This is explained by the fact that adolescents are a highly vulnerable population for engaging in NSI, primarily due to the high impulsivity and emotional reactivity that characterize this stage of life.
