Is video game addiction real?
Although most people who play video games do not have this disorder, video game addiction is officially recognized by the WHO in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) published in 2022. The diagnostic category of " gaming disorder " refers to the use of digital games or video games, whether online or offline. It is defined as a pattern of behavior characterized by a lack of control over gaming. This lack of control is reflected in the difficulty prioritizing other activities over gaming, placing the latter before other daily obligations. The time spent playing video games gradually increases or is maintained despite negative consequences.
Regardless of whether our son or daughter meets the diagnostic criteria, if their behavior related to video games is affecting their daily life, it would be advisable to intervene with a specialist to evaluate and help them become aware of the possible problem.
Gaming disorder is characterized by:
- A pattern of persistent or recurrent gambling behavior , manifested through " poor control over gambling " with regard to frequency, intensity, or duration.
- Gaming has become an increasing priority , to the point of replacing other vital interests or daily activities.
- A continuation or escalation of the game despite the negative consequences.
- An invalidation of the person in the personal, family, social, educational or occupational sphere.
- A duration of more than 12 months.
