Is it possible to reduce the risk of developing an eating disorder?
There are several protective factors that can help reduce the risk of developing an eating disorder:
Individual protective factors:
- Good self-esteem.
- Positive body image.
- Critical thinking in relation to media images.
- Emotional well-being.
- Good school adjustment (performance and relationship with peers).
- Assertiveness.
- Good social skills.
- Problem solving and coping strategies.
Family protective factors:
- Belonging to a family that does not place too much emphasis on weight and physical attractiveness.
- Have at least one of the main meals as a family.
Sociocultural protective factors:
- Belonging to a less Westernized culture that accepts a variety of body shapes and sizes.
- Participate in sports or industries where there is no emphasis on physical attractiveness or thinness.
- Socially supportive relationships where weight and physical appearance are not a major concern.
