Is it possible to reduce the risk of developing an eating disorder?

There are several protective factors that can help reduce the risk of developing an eating disorder:

Individual protective factors:

  • Good self-esteem.
  • Positive body image.
  • Critical thinking in relation to media images.
  • Emotional well-being.
  • Good school adjustment (performance and relationship with peers).
  • Assertiveness.
  • Good social skills.
  • Problem solving and coping strategies.

Family protective factors:

  • Belonging to a family that does not place too much emphasis on weight and physical attractiveness.
  • Have at least one of the main meals as a family.

Sociocultural protective factors:

  • Belonging to a less Westernized culture that accepts a variety of body shapes and sizes.
  • Participate in sports or industries where there is no emphasis on physical attractiveness or thinness.
  • Socially supportive relationships where weight and physical appearance are not a major concern.
