If I have psychotic experiences or symptoms, does that mean I have psychosis?
No. Although it is uncommon, psychotic (or psychotic-like) symptoms can be experienced when a person has other mental health problems. For example, one may have experiences of depersonalization (like being outside of oneself) with an anxiety attack, or have some of these symptoms when consuming certain toxic substances.
On the other hand, it is estimated that 15% of the general population has heard voices at some point in their lives and that thoughts of distrust or being watched or criticized by others are relatively frequent. If these experiences do not make you feel bad or are not changing your routine, there is no problem. If, on the other hand, discomfort or changes appear in your daily life (for example, stopping going to certain places) it is important that you ask for help to get better.
