How to reduce anxiety before Christmas meals?
Christmas can be one of the most challenging times of the year for people with eating disorders and their families, especially during social and family gatherings where food plays a central role. Here are some recommendations to help reduce anxiety before Christmas meals:
- Isolate the person with the eating disorder from all food preparations.
- Agree on where to store food so that it is not easily accessible and to prevent binge eating episodes.
- Prepare a support plan with the family so that the person with an eating disorder can avoid losing control of their eating.
- It can be agreed beforehand that they will not have to repeat the dish and that the quantities will be normal even if the rest of the people usually eat more than on a normal day.
- Explain to the affected person with whom we will be sharing each of the holidays so that they feel more secure.
- To offer information about eating disorders to invited people, always with the prior consent of the affected person, to help them understand it.
