Family and suicidal behavior
How does the stigma of suicidal behavior affect the family?
There are many limiting beliefs, stemming from the stigma associated with suicide , that prevent us from fulfilling our role effectively. Often, the family becomes the watchful guardian, which increases their anxiety and contributes to the perception that the person at risk is a burden on their family or community. If we support someone who has already attempted suicide, the fear of repetition will lead to sustained stress for those around them, and symptoms related to caregiver stress will appear.
- Feeling of constant worry.
- Frequent feeling of tiredness.
- Poor ability to concentrate on carrying out routine tasks.
- Loss of interest in activities that were previously enjoyed.
- Increased irritability.
- Social isolation often caused by the stigma of the family member's suicidal behavior.
- Lack of control of the situation, due to a lack of resources to deal with the situation.
