How does menstruation affect girls with ASD?

It has been observed that, on occasion, girls with ASD experience an intensification of their symptoms during menstruation, for example at a sensory level, with increased sensitivity to smell, touch, and pain, as well as greater difficulties in regulating emotions and behavior.

Girls with ASD will experience many changes during puberty, just like other girls. Their first period is likely to be one of their biggest milestones during this time. ASD does not affect when girls start their periods, so many girls with ASD will likely have their first period between the ages of nine and eleven.
