Old age
How can we help an elderly person who is having suicidal thoughts?
When we detect that someone is having suicidal thoughts, it's essential not to ignore it and to ensure they receive help. We must offer them our support, showing understanding and active listening, and demonstrating patience and empathy.
Some things we can do to help older people are:
- To offer you companionship, support, and supervision.
- Invite them to participate in activities outside their home that involve other people.
- Ensuring they have housing that meets their needs, transportation, food, and healthcare.
- Offer support with attending medical appointments and organizing medication. It's important to prevent pills from accumulating at home.
- Do not ignore comments about suicide and report them to your therapist or doctor. Ensure that suicidal thoughts receive timely follow-up. Many people with suicidal thoughts have a depressive disorder that can improve with timely treatment.
