Communication
How can I talk to a person with autism spectrum disorder who is not very verbal?
In these cases, the person may have alternative methods of communication, such as pictograms or even writing. Alternatively, you can try asking specific questions and trying to find out what interests them so you can talk about that topic. For some people with ASD, communication has a specific purpose, and they find it difficult to have "elevator" conversations—that is, conversations about trivial or uninteresting topics. It will likely be easier for them to communicate if it's about something that sparks their curiosity or passion.
