How can I manage the negative thoughts associated with eating disorders?

Avoiding them is difficult, considering they aren't sought out but rather generated by the disorder itself. Psychological therapy is what will allow you to overcome these recurring thoughts , but while you're working towards that goal, you can try strategies to change them. You might not succeed the first time, but it's important to try different methods until you find the one that works for you. Some tips:

  • Turn the thought around and generate an alternative thought that is rational.
  • Replace it with motivating and positive phrases.
  • Use distraction techniques.
  • Write it down in a notebook. That way, symbolically, it will "stay there" and won't escalate. Fill in the blank with something positive, something that overshadows the negative.
  • Recognize and accept that these are thoughts associated with the disorder. Remember that you are not that thought, and view it with a great deal of detachment.
  • Seek support from those around you. Engaging in activities and talking about other things provides comfort and companionship.
  • It's very important to consider how these thoughts make you feel and what influence they have on your behavior. If they are controlling you or causing you distress, seek help from qualified professionals.
