Social skills
How can I help a friend with ASD?
The most important thing to remember is that the diagnosis doesn't change your relationship. It will likely help you find explanations for some situations that previously seemed inexplicable.
Some general tips:
- Try to let him know in advance if there are any changes to the plans you've made.
- It's possible that after an outing or get-together, or even during travel, they may need moments of solitude . People with ASD have a "social battery" that is easily depleted and need to be alone to "recharge."
- Sometimes, your child may struggle to understand double meanings, jokes, or puns. This doesn't mean you always have to keep this in mind, but it's good to know that they might not get the joke the first time.
- Most importantly: We must treat people with respect , and a diagnosis or a "label" does not change this in any way.
- If you have doubts about what bothers him or her, how to support him or how to understand him or her, it is important to talk to him or her about it.
