Suicide prevention
How can a family provide good support after a suicide attempt?
The family, especially during adolescence, is the primary protective factor against the negative development of suicidal behavior. Therefore, beyond the resources available to families, the role they play in achieving four key aspects of suicide prevention is also crucial: reducing distress, increasing hope, fostering a sense of belonging, and reducing suicidal intent. Some tips on how to provide this close and protective support include:
- Eliminate or safeguard access to lethal methods that may exist in the family environment.
- Ensure that the person at risk complies with specialized outpatient follow-up, even at times when they do not see the point in doing so.
- Transmit hope: "We'll get through this together, with patience and without rushing, but we will get through it."
- Encourage social and family participation, promoting that the person at risk sees their friends and that they tell them that they are important to everyone.
- Conveying to him the idea that we feel good helping him, that we can all go through a bad time like his, and that, sometimes, helping others gives meaning to our lives.
