Addiction to new technologies

How can families encourage responsible screen use?

Prevention involves promoting healthy attitudes and habits in the different areas of the lives of our children and adolescents, and this begins by reviewing our role as role models.

Some basic recommendations are:

  • Be role models : Children learn primarily by imitation. We must use information technologies responsibly, communicate with them, and let them see us enjoying other activities.
  • Establish clear rules to regulate screen use based on age.
  • Spending time as a family: promoting screen-free leisure time will improve family cohesion and is a protective factor for general health (physical, cultural or social activity).
  • Keeping up to date with quality information technologies will bring us closer to them and help us better understand the risks and potential.
  • Encourage dialogue and critical thinking (helping people to think) .
  • A quick detection that "something is wrong" will help stop the negative spiral and redirect the situation.
  • By conveying our concern to them in a simple way, we can help them to self-reflect and develop critical thinking skills that will allow them to make healthy use of technology.
