Rights

How can I exercise my right to information?

People with mental health problems have the right to receive sufficient and understandable information about the diagnosis; existing treatment alternatives (and their effects); community support resources; their rights; procedures used in admissions; the risks that clinical trials (and other studies) may entail and the available aids.

Some recommendations for exercising your right to have this information are:

  • Know your rights and remind yourself of them when necessary (you can cite the articles of the New York Convention).
  • Familiarize yourself with informed consents and ask for them when you need them.
  • Ask for second professional opinions.
  • Go to the user and family associations present in your area and look for information.
  • If the violation situation persists, go to the patient or user care services.
