Pharmacological treatment
Do medications used to treat ADHD cause dependence?
These medications, far from "altering" our brain function, attempt to "normalize" the deficient levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain areas involved in ADHD. And absolutely not, they do not generate any kind of dependence. When the person stops taking the treatment, the brain simply returns to being deficient in these neurotransmitters, and we observe the same difficulties that were present without treatment.
