Family
Is depression hereditary?
Depression is a complex disorder that has multiple risk factors, both biological and environmental, that interact with each other and can have a cumulative effect.
There may be some familial tendency for depression, but there is no clear pattern that suggests that depression can be inherited. Some researchers have suggested that people who have a first- or second-degree relative with depression are more likely to develop it than people with a family without a history of mental illness.
