Eating disorder
Can social media be a risk factor for developing anorexia or bulimia?
Websites, blogs, chat rooms, and social media profiles can be spaces used to promote anorexia and bulimia anonymously, targeting a very young audience, mostly underage girls. Instagram is perhaps the social network with the greatest impact on these practices.
According to a report by the Internet Quality Agency, there are nearly four million social media posts using hashtags that conceal this type of content. Its very dynamics can encourage comparisons, increase body dissatisfaction among young people, and trigger or reinforce eating disorders. Mechanisms exist for reporting this type of content.
