Can screen use cause insomnia?
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are now an integral part of adolescents' daily lives, serving as useful and common tools for academic pursuits, socialization, and entertainment. However, ICT use can contribute to insomnia, just as insomnia can increase ICT use (they have a bidirectional relationship).
Exposure to blue light (a natural and necessary component of light also present in sunlight) from mobile phones or tablets interferes with the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin. Furthermore, online activity can often be unsettling (social media, excessive information consumption, inappropriate websites), making it difficult to create a suitable sleep environment.
On the other hand, insomnia increases the likelihood that the adolescent will use screens while mistakenly waiting for sleep to appear, thus perpetuating the insomnia .
