Self-harm, suicide attempts, and death are the most serious consequences of eating disorders. People with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia experience more self-harm, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, and suicides than the general population. Major depressive disorder and substance abuse associated with eating disorders are risk factors for suicidal behavior.
