Eating disorder

Can eating disorders have serious physical complications?

Yes. Although they are mental disorders, they can have serious physical consequences due to the specific changes in eating behavior. Depending on the presence of restriction or purging, such as self-induced vomiting, or excessive physical activity, we may find:

  • Progressive weight loss or sudden fluctuations.
  • Loss or irregularities of menstruation or failure of the first period to occur.
  • Bone deterioration to the point of developing osteoporosis.
  • Paleness, hair loss or hair depigmentation (due to vitamin deficiency), feeling of cold and bluish fingers.
  • Weakness, constipation, and dizziness.
  • In chronic cases, infertility problems may appear.
  • Heart rate abnormalities that can cause sudden death.
  • Inflammation of the parotid glands (like mumps).
  • Chronic throat irritation.
  • Loss of tooth enamel and loss of teeth.
  • Obesity-related problems such as respiratory problems, hypertension.
  • Most of the consequences improve with recovery thanks to treatment, although depending on the duration of the disease, some of them may remain, especially when they have been present for many years.
