Can antidepressants cause suicidal thoughts?
According to the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS), antidepressants can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, especially at the start of treatment or when the dose is changed. This risk is more pronounced in adolescents and young adults (under 25 years of age). For this reason, the AEMPS emphasizes the need for close medical supervision to monitor any changes in mood.
But it's important to remember that untreated depression significantly increases the risk of suicide. Antidepressants, over time, often reduce this risk by improving the symptoms of the disorder . Therefore, treatment should never be stopped without medical advice.
