Are there teenagers who are more at risk of developing an addiction?
Adolescence is a developmental stage during which individuals can be especially vulnerable to risky behaviors, one of which can be problematic screen use or addiction. These behaviors will be resolved more or less successfully depending on various factors. Some of the aspects that influence this increased vulnerability to developing problematic screen use or addiction are:
The very characteristics of their development : the stage of identity formation, the need for experimentation, for constant stimulation, for immediate gratification, difficulty tolerating boredom and managing negative emotions, the expansion of social relationships, the need for role models who reinforce their particularities…
Brain development : characterized by brain immaturity that leads to greater impulsivity, poor control of behavior, planning and decision making, a low perception of risk with a "feeling of invulnerability".
The greater availability of screens , which provides them with undeniable advantages such as autonomy, communication, social relationships…
Time management (extracurricular activities, for example).
Life events and opportunities.
Personality development: there are certain personality characteristics or emotional states that increase psychological vulnerability to problematic use or addiction:
- Impulsiveness.
- The tendency to experience restlessness, irritability, sadness.
- Intolerance to stimuli that do not cause pleasure.
- The difficulties in coping with everyday challenges.
- The constant need to have new experiences and to experience new sensations (search for intense emotions, excitement, disinhibition, taste for risk).
- Excessive shyness, low self-esteem or personal dissatisfaction with life, feelings of loneliness.
These characteristics coincide with the development of personality, and therefore with the ability to develop internal resources that allow them to overcome difficulties and problems.
