Are there people who are at higher risk of suicide?

Anyone can engage in suicidal behavior, but personal, family, and social factors have been identified that increase the risk of suicide. Identifying and detecting these factors is a first step in preventing death by suicide.

  • Having a mental disorder (especially depression).
  • Having made previous suicide attempts and self-harm.
  • Having a personality characterized by high impulsivity and emotional dysregulation.
  • Feeling hopeless about the present and the future.
  • Having been a victim of traumatic events, abuse, neglect or abandonment in childhood.
  • Being subjected to a high level of stress, especially at school and/or in interpersonal relationships with peers.
  • Being in a stressful family situation, or having suffered a significant loss.
  • Being experiencing a situation of school bullying or cyberbullying.
  • Having suffered a traumatic and unexpected breakup.
  • Having suffered the death of a friend or a close relative by suicide.
