Are there people who are at higher risk of developing an eating disorder?
Although eating disorders affect people of both sexes and all ages and backgrounds, they are more common in adolescent girls and young adults . There are common personality traits that can increase the risk of developing these disorders, such as difficulty coping with stress and setbacks. People with anorexia nervosa tend to be more perfectionistic and self-demanding, while those with bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder are more prone to impulsivity.
It should also be noted that people who practice certain sports and professions where weight, diet and discipline are relevant aspects, such as dance, synchronized swimming, sports where competition is by weight category, models, etc., have a higher risk of having an eating disorder.
