Do the symptoms of ASD worsen with age?
The core symptoms of ASD, such as interaction and communication difficulties, do not usually worsen with age; on the contrary, they often improve. However, cognitive rigidity can sometimes worsen if it hasn't been addressed previously, and executive function difficulties may become more pronounced. It is possible that with age, if the person lacks the necessary support or strategies, or simply is unaware of their diagnosis (and therefore may not understand why certain things happen to them), symptoms of anxiety or depression may increase. These are not considered core symptoms of ASD, although they can be common in adulthood. In fact, anxiety and depressive symptoms are the most frequent reasons why adults with ASD seek mental health services.
The symptoms of autism do not necessarily worsen with age, but they can manifest differently at different stages of life. Some people with autism may learn to manage certain situations better as they practice, mature, and acquire more social and emotional skills.
However, as I said, everything is relative. For example, if a person with autism enters a complex work environment, their problems or symptoms may worsen.
