Often we're tempted to intervene, but sometimes less is more... And I understand that someone experiencing an anxiety attack also needs their space. What do you recommend not doing? What mistakes do you think healthcare professionals make most frequently?

When healthcare professionals are faced with an anxiety attack, it can make us feel anxious ourselves due to the difficulty of tolerating the other person's distress, which is why we tend to rush in. We shouldn't panic. If we are sure it is an anxiety attack, we should remain calm, simply be there for them, and remind them that it is unpleasant but not dangerous and that it will pass. Another common mistake is thinking that the person "can control it." Sometimes we struggle to understand what they are experiencing or believe that it depends on them to make it stop, and we say things like "calm down" or "relax," which are unhelpful.
