Approach

Experts in ICT and emotional well-being in the workplace will address the challenges and opportunities that mental health prevention interventions through ICT pose for organizations and workers.

This will interest you if...

…your field of work is talent and human resources development, whether you are a mental health professional or if you are interested, as a worker, in learning more about promoting emotional well-being in the workplace.

Description

Work has positive effects on people's emotional well-being. Among other benefits, it provides a livelihood, a sense of security, purpose and accomplishment, an opportunity for positive relationships and community inclusion, and a platform for structured routines. Even so, there are workplace characteristics that can pose risks to workers' mental health — psychosocial risks that may be related to the content of the work, working hours, specific workplace features, professional development opportunities, and so on.

Situations related to disorders such as stress, depression, and anxiety can account for 40% of the causes of occupational diseases, and are associated with lost work days, low productivity, and high healthcare costs.

Interventions to promote emotional well-being at work have proven effective in reducing the burden associated with mental health problems. Increasingly, these programs are being implemented through new technologies (ICTs), such as online applications or platforms . Some of the advantages they offer include anonymity for employees, adaptation to their needs, and low cost for the company. However, there are barriers that can hinder successful implementation, both from the perspective of the ICTs themselves and from the perspectives of the company and the individual employee.

Understanding these barriers and facilitators to ICTs applied to interventions that promote mental health in the workplace can facilitate their success.
