The silent challenge
What do we do about unwanted loneliness in older people?
A social phenomenon with significant implications for the mental and physical health of those who suffer from it.
Unwanted loneliness in older adults is a complex social problem that requires a comprehensive prevention and intervention strategy that includes community participation and awareness-raising. It is essential to involve multiple stakeholders in its detection and treatment, as it significantly affects both the mental and physical health of the older adults who experience it.
In this monograph we review the key concepts provided by the Guide for accompanying unwanted loneliness in older people (Solidarity San Juan de Dios), highlighting the importance of support networks, detection and measurement, early intervention and the involvement of volunteers.
