Trapped in a "brave new world"

Keys to preventing youth suicide

Talking about suicide and its prevention is a necessity and an obligation we have as a society, because these are preventable deaths. When we talk about adolescents, almost children, and young adults, the phenomenon is even more tragic. Although it's not new that suicide is the leading cause of non-natural death among this population group, the number of attempts and suicides we've seen in this past pandemic year has set off alarm bells worldwide.

Why do young people commit suicide?

Even knowing that when we talk about suicide and serious self-harm the factors are individual and diverse, we must ask ourselves if our society is doing enough to improve the emotional health of its citizens and, likewise, if the social processes that this post-industrial era of climate change and digital revolution entails are not determining factors in understanding these emerging behaviors.

Listen to me!

"A year and a half after that night, I am sitting in my room writing this text. It is a hot summer afternoon like any other, the sun bathes the streets in light and you can feel the silence of midday. There is calm. That oppression in my chest that pushed me towards a definitive and irreversible decision for a temporary situation has disappeared; I can breathe again."
